BE STILL by Michael Gebbia

“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in all the earth.” Psalm 46:10

I have been coaching for 25 years. After spending 17 of those coaching at the collegiate level, I decided to step down and enter the “slower paced” high school environment. To my surprise, I found out quickly that teaching and coaching at the high school level was just as challenging, time-consuming and hectic as coaching in college. It some ways, it was even more stressful, as I found myself running ragged trying to get everything done.

These past few years, it has been absolutely non-stop. And it has led me to believe that God is showing me how to “be still”(Psalm 46:10). More than anything, He has used injuries to get my attention. I have experienced depression, knee surgery, gall bladder surgery, a broken thumb, neck suregery, dislocated finger, abdominal blockage, broken ribs,an eye infection and currently a sprained knee(MCL). Hopefully I won’t need an MRI and another surgery. It is amazing that I have been relatively healthy my entire life, but recently God has certainly used these injuries and illnesses to teach me a lesson.

At first, I thought God wanted me to slow down. When football started, my time with the Lord diminished, and I was running around so frantically that I often wouldn’t even eat lunch. In time, another injury, or surgery surfaced, and God again got my attention and asked me to slow down or perhaps telling me to “be still”. I’d been running so fast that I ran right past Him without seeing or hearing Him. It was like I was a base runner rounding 3rd base and not even paying attention to the 3rd base coach. Using a driving analogy, I would be driving fast, see the yellow light and not slow down, use caution and be prepared to be still; in fact I would speed up, so I could beat the red light.. With each and every injury/illness God was sending me a message to slow down. Eventually, I would get better, heal and start racing fast again. God does not want us continually speeding like a race car driver around the track. He wants us to take a pit stop. God will do what He wants to make us “be still”. There is no possible way to develop your relationship with Him, if you are not still, rest in Him, and experience His presence.

Sometimes in life, God has to get our attention to remind us that He is God. Certain Scriptures apply specifically to life’s challenges. Romans 5:3-5 and James 1:2-4, and others remind us that God still loves us even during these circumstances. They remind us to wait for Him and , of course, to “be still”(Psalm 46:10, Psalm 27:14, Psalm 37:7, Psalm 23:2, Psalm 33:20, Psalm 40:1). During a game, a coach may need to call a time out. During that time out, the players are to be still, and listen. Just think, God is our Head Coach in life, and sometimes He will call a time out, to get us to “be still”, listen to Him and spend time with Him!
